Eulogy for a summer

Today is the day I choose to perform my spiritual mourning of an endless yet distant summer. I believe some part of me, I left behind on the soil of some strange land in the States. The country I have grown to love – and hate – so passionately, irresistibly. There’s no need to pinpoint its whereabouts, for I have no aspiration to give it a tombstone. Let it be part of The Land.

Hè này, tôi xem đua xe Indy 500

Dư âm của Indy 500 vẫn âm ỉ trong chúng tôi nhiều ngày sau đó. Chúng tôi thi thoảng lại bật những clip quay lại những cú vượt mặt thần sầu, và nhất là hai vòng đua cuối. Tôi thấy một Newgarden lì lợm, liều lĩnh nhưng cũng không kém phần bản lĩnh. Không thể nào nhìn thấy được cục diện rõ ràng như vậy khi ngồi trên khán đài. Hè năm sau, tôi sẽ không tiếp tục ở lại Mỹ để một lần nữa chứng kiến một trong ba mươi ba tay đua bước lên bục vinh quang và tắm sữa. Hè năm sau, có lẽ tôi sẽ sắm cho mình một cuộc phiêu lưu mới, có thêm một câu chuyện mới để kể. Nhưng tôi chắc chắn rằng, nếu có dịp ở Mỹ, tôi sẽ lại nấu nướng, gói ghém những món ăn Việt Nam ngọt lành đến IMS, trùm những bộ đồ chống nắng thứ dữ từ Việt Nam, và reo hò suốt ba tiếng đồng hồ theo những vòng đua nghẹt thở của Indy 500.

Film review: Roma (2018)

Roma is a cinematic masterpiece that came to life thanks to Alfonso Cuarón’s multiple talents, which enabled him to serve as a director, cinematographer, producer, screenwriter, and editor. Dubbed as an autobiographical film, Roma successfully captures the snapshots of everyday life in 1970-1971 in the titular neighborhood in Mexico, from the perspective of a middle-income household maid named Cleo. I have to say I was astonished by his eye for detail and subtleness: Only after the second time could I catch a glimpse of supposedly all teeny weeny delicacies that he deliberately left unattended within scenes.
